Genoa Subport Tunnel | Italy

Completed in: ongoing

The Genoa Subport Tunnel project involves building a new east-west underground connection running from the port basin to the Carignano hill, between San Benigno and Viale Brigate Partigiane. This is the first Italian underwater tunnel that will help improve urban traffic flow and access to the port area.

As part of Lot B, being built by Webuild Group on behalf of Autostrade per l’Italia, SELI Overseas is involved in tunnel excavation activities. The lot is divided into three sub-lots and includes preparatory works, mechanized excavation of the two main tunnel tubes, and completion works.

Sub-lot B1 involves mechanically excavating the two main tunnel tubes using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) with a diameter of approximately 16 metres, making it one of the largest TBMs used in Italy. The total excavation length is approximately 7 km, in an urban and port environment featuring varying geological conditions and the presence of groundwater.

The tunnels will be lined with precast concrete segments to ensure structural strength and watertightness.
