The only mechanised tunnel excavation project successfully completed under the great overburdens of the Himalayas was completed with record output levels.

For this project, SELI Overseas developed the design of a new type of Telescopic Double Shield TBM, the “Double Shield Universal”, with very conical shields, high thrust and overcutting capacity.

This new design made it possible to overcome the squeezing and converging ground formations typical of the Himalayan mountain range and the large overburdens under which the tunnel route ran.

This project made it possible to build tunnels that were previously considered impossible.
