Sibiu–Pitești Motorway, Lot 3 | Romania

Status: ongoing

Lot 3 of the Sibiu–Pitești Motorway, currently under construction by the Webuild-led joint venture, marks SELI Overseas’ first project in Romania.

On behalf of the joint venture, SELI Overseas will deliver the Poiana Tunnel, which, with its twin tubes extending for 1.7 kilometres each (3.4 kilometres in total), will become the longest motorway tunnel in Romania.

Excavation works will be carried out using a 12.5-metre-diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine, specifically designed to operate in the variable geological conditions typical of mountain crossings.

Once completed, the Sibiu–Pitești Motorway will extend for more than 122 kilometres and will play a key role in connecting central and western Romania to the European motorway network. As part of the Rhine–Danube Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the project is considered one of the country’s most strategic transport investments.

Lot 3 is the most technically demanding section of the route, crossing the Carpathian Mountains between Cornetu and Tigveni along a 37.4-kilometre alignment.
