The project for doubling the Cosenza-Paola/S. Lucido (Santomarco Tunnel) Section of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria HS Railway Line, commissioned by RFI (FS Italian Group) andforesees a new double track connection between Paola/S. Lucido and Cosenza stations. It develops over an approximately 22.2 km-long route, of which 17 km underground.
The new Santomarco Tunnel, one of the line’s strategic works, and the main part of the project,. It is a natural tunnel of approximately 15.4 km in length of and the remaining part made from entrance artificial tunnels. The twin tunnel will be completed with transversal connection bypasses (Cross-passages), every 500 meters between the two tubes. 4 TBMs will be used to excavate the tunnel.
The new Santomarco Tunnel will run approximately 100 meters from the already existing tunnel (single track), which will be dismissed once works are completed.
Seli Overseas is part of the Consortium led by Webuild and composed of Pizzarotti and Ghella, responsible for the design and execution of the works. As part of the construction, Seli Overseas will contribute to the tunneling activities to be carried out using TBMs.
