Use of the telescopic shield to safely excavate mixed ground for the Bogotá aqueduct. SELI faced a very different geology than what was expected: a complex ground that put both the TBM and excavation plans to the test. The choice of a telescopic Double Shield TBM with ad hoc designed solutions proved decisive to manage sudden variations, unexpected pressures and intermittent advances. The project made it possible to collect valuable data on TBM behavior under extreme conditions and to define technical improvements now applied in new projects.
