Evinos – Mornos | Greece
Completed in: 1994

The Evinos–Mornos project, one of the longest hydraulic tunnels built with a TBM, required the excavation of 30 km under some of the most complex geological conditions in Europe: flysch, abrasive cherts, overthrust zones and overburden up to 1,300 m. SELI operated two Double Shield TBMs simultaneously to meet an accelerated schedule, completing the work in less than 3 years. The tunnel required advanced technical solutions: a cutterhead with the possibility to overcutting excavation systematically in converging squeezing sections, hybrid linings (prefabricated segments and in situ casting), and special methodologies to manage frontal collapses, squeezing and the widespread presence of methane in the rock mass being traversed. It was a project that brought together SELI’s ability to operate across great lengths through extreme terrain, managing multiple fronts simultaneously and stabilizing the excavation cycle even in the most unpredictable contexts.
