SELI Overseas to lead TBM excavations for Webuild group projects in Romania and Italy on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria High-Speed railway
SELI Overseas, a Webuild Group company specialized in mechanized excavation, is consolidating its operational footprint with new contracts for TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) management on two major infrastructure projects led by the Group in Romania and Italy. The company has been entrusted with the full management of the excavation cycle, spanning from machine assembly and commissioning to final dismantling.
SELI Overseas marks its entry into the Romanian infrastructure market with the construction of Section 3 of the Sibiu–Pitești Highway. As part of the TEN-T Rhine–Danube corridor, this project crosses the Carpathian Mountains, linking Transylvania to the south of the country. Specifically, SELI Overseas will work on behalf of the Webuild-led joint venture to construct the Poiana Tunnel. At 1.7 kilometers with twin tubes (totaling 3.4 km), it will be the longest highway tunnel in Romania. Excavation will be carried out using an EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) TBM with a 12.5-meter diameter, specifically designed to handle the variable geological conditions typical of mountain crossings.
In Italy, SELI Overseas is strengthening its operations on Lot 1A (Battipaglia–Romagnano) as part of the Salerno–Reggio Calabria High-Speed/High-Capacity railway development. The scope of work includes the “Piano Grasso” and “Contursi” tunnels, covering a total length of approximately 4 kilometers. Operations are powered by the TBM “Ligea,” a 13.46-meter diameter borer that ranks among the largest Webuild machines currently active in Europe. Beyond excavation and lining, SELI Overseas will manage site logistics, muck handling, and the translation of the machine across the viaduct situated between the two tunnels.
These latest developments are part of the integration process within the Webuild Group that began in 2021. Today, with 75 years of experience, a workforce of approximately 900 people, and a track record of 846 kilometers of tunnels built across 32 countries, SELI Overseas stands as a specialized technical partner for the Group’s major underground works.
