SELI on Cairo Metro Line 4: TBM Relaunched from El Remaya Station for Final Tunnel Drive
Construction on Cairo Metro Line 4 in Egypt has reached another milestone as the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) resumed excavation from El Remaya Station. The relaunch follows its arrival last August, after driving over 780 meters through one of the project’s most technically challenging stretches. SELI, a Webuild Group company specializing in underground works, is providing expert technical assistance and operational support for the TBM throughout the drive.
The relaunch of the 700-ton, 100-meter-long machine—equipped with a 6.73-meter-diameter cutterhead—caps a complex engineering campaign lasting nearly two months. The operation required moving, dismantling, hauling, and reassembling the massive machine directly within the station work area. Executing this turnaround demanded seamless coordination across all teams and pinpoint accuracy during reassembly.
The TBM is now driving the project’s final tunnel segment: a 731-meter stretch toward Al Ahramat Station, where it will make its ultimate breakthrough to complete the underground route.
Resuming excavation right on schedule reflects rigorous planning, strong interdisciplinary coordination, and the high-level expertise of the field teams across every stage of the move.
With a 75-year track record, around 900 employees, and approximately 850 kilometers of tunnels completed across 32 countries, SELI Overseas serves as Webuild’s specialized technical partner for major underground infrastructure. The company continues to pioneer advanced, sustainable tunneling technologies, including Dual Mode TBM systems, Continuous Mining methods, and predictive digital tools engineered to mitigate risks and cut emissions on site.
